What type of habitat is best for your pet hamster? There are a few different types of hamster cages to choose from, including wire, plastic, and glass. Each type offers advantages and disadvantages, especially when factoring in the way hamsters prefer to live in the wild. Wild hamsters love to dig tunnels underground and burrow into cozy little dens. They will typically have one “room” for toileting and another “room” specifically for sleeping and playing. Wire and glass hamster cages are usually one large room, so they don’t provide a lot of customization options to keep your hamster stimulated. Of these two options, wire hamster cages provide more ventilation, but the smaller varieties of hamsters may be able to escape through the bars.

In this way, hamsters can even be “toilet trained,” significantly reducing the amount of work needed to keep their cage clean. Rotastak Hamster Cages are made of durable plastic that will last for years. Simply take the pieces apart periodically and wash them down with mild soap and water.

Regardless of which style you decide on, most hamster cages will be available as starter kits, complete with a food dish and water bottle. You’ll need to purchase bedding separately, which your hamster will enjoy burrowing into to sleep, and also use for toileting. Wood shavings are not recommended because hamsters can actually develop allergies and skin irritations from this type of bedding. Look for paper-based bedding, or you can use shredded toilet tissue or paper towels. Don’t throw out the empty rolls – your hamster will love running through the tunnel and gnawing on the ends! Hamster cages should be kept at comfortable temperatures – between 18 and 26 degrees Celsius is ideal - and out of direct sunlight.

So what should you feed your hamster? In the wild, hamsters eat a variety of seeds, grass, and insects, so it’s best to try to mimic their natural diet as much as possible. Always keep their food dish full of hamster food so their basic nutritional needs are met, but supplement with fresh fruits, nuts, and vegetables as much as possible. Most hamsters will love small bits of lettuce, cauliflower, cucumber, broccoli, apples, pears, peaches, berries, and bananas. Remove any fresh fruits and vegetables from the cage each day so they do not attract bugs or begin to rot. Since hamsters are nocturnal, offer these fresh foods at night before you go to sleep, as they’ll be more likely to eat them overnight while they're most active. Their water bottle should be rinsed and refilled at least once per day.

When you first bring your hamster home, give him a few days to acclimate to his new home before you try to tame him. Taming your hamster is not only fun, but will enable you to clean his habitat much more easily. Slowly begin to offer his favorite foods from your hand, and encourage him to approach you and hop on your hand. Move slowly and speak softly, and don’t rush the process. With time, your hamster will relax and enjoy spending time out of his cage with you.
